Ride the Lightning [Vinyl] Specifications
Don’t let that classical-guitar-ish opening to “Fight Fire with Fire” fool you–Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war (“Fight Fire with Fire”), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning (“Trapped Under Ice”). Interestingly, the best track on this album is probably “Fade to Black,” a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There’s also “Creeping Death,” which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield’s trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended. –Genevieve Williams

Ride the Lightning Review

This album is classic. I remember not liking it at first, but it didn’t take very long for this genius piece of work to finally grow on me. I love this album for about all it’s worth. Every second beginning to end is awesome. The MP3 album came with two live tracks on it that I was pretty happy to get with it. This used to be my favorite album, not anymore though, but doesn’t make it classic. Personally (and I might get stabbed for it) I think Justice was my favorite album released by Metallica. Lots of good songs on this album. Creeping Death and Call of Ktulu are alone some of the best tracks on this album. The title track is pretty fudgin’ sweet as well. If you haven’t heard this album or happen to just be getting into Metallica there’s no excuse why you shouldn’t have this album. Never been a bad Metallica at all in my opinion (St Anger wasn’t bad at all, it grew on me–it’s just weak. If anything, Reload is probably their weakest album in my book).

Ride the Lightning (Mlps) Review

A departure from KILL EM’ ALL, this album gets more complex, musically and lyrically. The material takes a more mature tone, dealing with themes such as fear, unjust punishment, suicide, rebellion, nuclear warfare and even one based on a historical event. There is an instrumental based on Lovecrafts’ Call of Cthulhu. Mustaines’ influence is found on this album, but not as strongly as on their previous record. Metallica’s first ballad appears here and the album is isn’t all thrash. It takes a more melodic and thoughtful turn at times, moreso than before, and Kirk Hammets’ background in classical guitar begins to shine through. The jewel of the album is of course CREEPING DEATH, a track originating when the late Cliff Burton made a comment while watching The Ten Commandments, “It’s like creeping death!” during the lambs blood painted door scene. This album is a must have and only hints at what was to come next!
A lock – 5 out of 5 stars.
