Ride the Lightning (Mlps) Review

A departure from KILL EM’ ALL, this album gets more complex, musically and lyrically. The material takes a more mature tone, dealing with themes such as fear, unjust punishment, suicide, rebellion, nuclear warfare and even one based on a historical event. There is an instrumental based on Lovecrafts’ Call of Cthulhu. Mustaines’ influence is found on this album, but not as strongly as on their previous record. Metallica’s first ballad appears here and the album is isn’t all thrash. It takes a more melodic and thoughtful turn at times, moreso than before, and Kirk Hammets’ background in classical guitar begins to shine through. The jewel of the album is of course CREEPING DEATH, a track originating when the late Cliff Burton made a comment while watching The Ten Commandments, “It’s like creeping death!” during the lambs blood painted door scene. This album is a must have and only hints at what was to come next!

A lock – 5 out of 5 stars.

Ride the Lightning (Mlps) Specifications

Don’t let that classical-guitar-ish opening to “Fight Fire with Fire” fool you–Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war (“Fight Fire with Fire”), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning (“Trapped Under Ice”). Interestingly, the best track on this album is probably “Fade to Black,” a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There’s also “Creeping Death,” which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield’s trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended. –Genevieve Williams

And Justice for All (Mlps)

And Justice for All (Mlps) Review

Two years after the death of bassist Cliff Burton,Metallica bounced back and released “…And Justice For All” in 1988 with new bassist Jason Newsted. It reflects the anger and sadness towards Cliff’s death and Metallica made what is undeniably their most complex album here, with many tempo changes and the album has “Anger!” written all over it.This release is just as good as the previous releases of the band if not better. Its full of epic songs such as the title track,”One” and “Eye Of The Beholder”, actually all of the 9 songs on the album are no less than 5 minutes each and many of them are considered classics of Metallica. This album is actually considered by some fans as the last trash metal album Metallica ever made, and in some cases the last good album they did. While those opinions are certainly discussable “And Justice For All” is certainly a great album from Metallica, and I believe that it is their last Trash Metal album. Actually at times it seems to be even more raw and heavy than some of their other albums and it contains “To Live Is To Die” a song on which former bassist Cliff Burton wrote the lyrics and that is mostly a tribute to Cliff.

“…And Justic For All” is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Filled with long Epics and you can feel that each musician here except newbie Jason Newsted (Jason’s bass is buried somewhere under the guitars, you can hear it at times but it’s not a HUGE presence) play to their full potential. If you didn’t think Lars Ulrich was a great drummer before this album, you will as Lars is really focused here its probably the album he plays best on.Kirk Hammett probably never played better and Jame Hetfield’s vocals are unleashed! They all play great here but Jason Newsted is notably absent from the album as you don’t hear much if any bass at all it seems as it was erased or just never done so the album is just guitars. Some say that the bass’s sound is buried under the massive guitars and it could be true.Because of that the album sounds real raw but that’s how some metal heads like it,if you want one of their more sophisticated release you are at the wrong place. This is pure Metallica, you already can picture them playing with their ripped jeans and t-shirt just getting down to the metal business, they don’t do glam things its just about the music and this album reflects that nicely. At least that’s who they were in 1988…

I previously said that this album had some of Metallica’s best songs and I’m getting to that point right now.I have to start with my personal favorite “One” which is an impressive song at 7:27,its a great near ballad with some aggressive pace changes and i would have to nominate this particular song as one of Metallica’s best songs if not their best, you can just feel the anger in it trough Jame’s voice I like it!The opener “Blackened” is a strong album opener, nearly has a scary feel the sudden change of tempo is nicely done and the lyrics are awesome a great song. The title track is another epic, this one is pretty long as it is over 9 minutes! Many listeners won’t get to the end of it,its underrated.”Eye Of The Beholder” is amongst the best songs of the album, another anger-filled song.”The Shortest Straw” has a great chorus and is great overall, its unappreciated of you ask me but its pretty good stuff.

I won’t say anymore, the songs are terrific and this album is definitely worth a listen.”…And Justice For All” is often forgotten because it was made between the classic “Master Of Puppets” and their commercial success, the “Black Album” or “Metallica” if you prefer. It shouldn’t because it is as good as those two albums if not better and has amazing arrangements and complex songs, along with an overall dark feeling and a touch of anger everywhere. If you want to hear unleashed Metallica THIS is the place! Its a masterpiece for a metalhead like a Picasso would be for an artist. Also this was the last album before they went the commercial road with their next album “Metallica” in 1991(Actually they started to be commercial for this album, they made a video when they said never would make any)this is definitely their last true trash metal album. 5 stars all the way.

And Justice for All (Mlps) Specifications

This record has so much good material that it’s a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica’s most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. “One” is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It’s the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting. Metallica took a commercial turn after …And Justice for All, and it’s interesting to speculate on what would have happened to their music had they continued in the direction suggested by this album. –Genevieve Williams
