Prince Caspian – Film Review

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Synopsis:

Adapted from the second book in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian picks up where The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe leaves off. It’s been a year since the four Pevensie children, Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes), and Lucy (Georgie Henley) returned from the magical world of Narnia where mythical creatures exist and the animals can speak, even if you haven’t been smoking up.

Metallica

But one year translates to about 1300 in Narnia.

Prince Caspian – Film Review

And since the Pevensie children returned to London, Narnia was attacked and conquered by the Telmarines, who left the entire land looking like the aftermath of a metallica concert. Under the evil King Miraz (Sergio Castellito), the Telmarines tried to exterminate the Narnians (many of whom resemble metallica fans), driving them into the woods where they live in hiding.

When Miraz’s queen (Alicia Borrachero) gives birth to a male heir, Miraz tries unsuccessfully to murder his nephew Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), the rightful heir to the Telmarine throne. Caspian grew up learning about Narnia’s noble and peaceful culture, and because of his sympathies to their ways, is forced to flee. He escapes to the woods and regroups with a rag-tag group of Narnians. And when he summons help, he unwittingly draws the four Pevensie children, who once ruled as wise kings and queens, back to his magical world.

With the vast Telmarine army closing in, The Pevensie children and Prince Caspian must figure out a way to defeat King Miraz and restore peace and order to Narnia. Once again they must rely on the wisdom of the great Lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson). But Aslan has not been seen for ages, yet Lucy, the youngest of the Pevensie children, still believes in him and even claims to have spotted him since they’ve returned. Will her childlike faith be the key to their salvation, or are the Narnians better off taking matters into their own hands/paws/hooves?

The Good:

Quite faithful to C.S. Lewis’ novel, Prince Caspian is a well structured, highly imaginative adventure film that will appeal to both children and adults. The movie does not talk down to kids and the special effects are very well done. Much of the Christian symbolism and theological philosophies of Lewis’ work remain intact, and are effectively woven into the narrative.

Much of the film’s look and action will make viewers think of Lord of the Rings, which may be appropriate seeing how J.R.R. Tolkien was Lewis’ good friend and mentor.

The characters are a lot of fun, and the talking animals will certainly appeal to kids. Particularly endearing are Reepicheep the valiant mouse (voiced by Eddie Izzard), and Trufflehunter the badger (voiced by Ken Stott). As cute as they are, the animals here have a sense of dignity about them and serve a specific purpose in the story. They aren’t there to just be silly, which is a relief.

The film also has very strong, positive messages about the importance of faith, loyalty, and courage, which turn out to be relevant and meaningful to viewers of all ages.

The bad:

Although marketed as a family movie, there is a surprising amount of violence in this film that might prove too intense for small children. For instance, you may raise an eyebrow at the sight of a cute, sword-wielding mouse slashing someone’s throat.

Granted it’s nothing disturbing (your kids might even think it’s funny), but it’s a similar amount of shock you’d feel if Bugs Bunny shot Yosemite Sam with his own gun, then have the joke just end there with Yosemite Sam lying on the ground without getting up.

Who would like this movie:

With enough action and adventure to please a broad range of fantasy movie fans, Prince Caspian will be particularly meaningful to Christian believers. Many of the messages are positive for kids, but other theological references are rather deep and subtle to the point where it may even take some time for grown-ups to absorb.

And finally, the film urges us to retain the imagination we had as children, as Lewis asserts that doing so enables us to see the possibilities, hope, and answers in a dark and seemingly hopeless world.

(3 and 1/2 out of 4 stars)

Sound of the Beast – The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal Review

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Sound of the Beast – The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy metal, Ian Christe, Harper Entertainment, 2004.

If you are an avid metal fan, you are new to the music and you didn’t know shit about the history of this blasphemous music, then this is the gospel for you. I got this book somewhere in August 2009 and managed to finish the book a few days later. Captivating would be a perfect word to sum the wonderful deliverance of this book. It’s a fun read.

Metallica

It was not really the academic type so to speak. Compared to Lords of Chaos, this book is far more light weight, in terms of how the book was authored, content wise though, this book offers more information than anyone could handle thus living up to its title, the complete headbanging history of heavy metal.

Sound of the Beast – The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal Review

The one I got was the revised edition with a newly added chapter discussing the perception and tribulation of metal music in the Muslim world. And guess what? Malaysia spearheaded the chapter and even Harian Metro got a worthy mention.

The content of this book follows the root of heavy metal in the 1970s, the NWOBHM, the thrash metal evolution in the 80s, the rise of death metal and the blasphemy of the Norwegian Black Metal in the 90s each with a chapter of its own.

A few pages in between were dedicated to explain the more major types of metal in the likes of Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Industrial Metal, Grindcore just to name a few, complete with a list of influential bands and albums for each subgenre for easy reference.

This book also closely followed the evolution of Metallica, just so you know.

Yamaha Guitar Package Review

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

If you are looking to learn how to play the guitar, buying an electric guitar is probably better than it’s acoustic cousin for two reasons. First of all the strings are softer and easier to press down, which is important for “virgin fingers”. Secondly, you can learn some incredibly simple, and yet massively iconic riffs within hours of setting up!

The Yamaha ERG-Gigmaker Electric Guitar pack consists of:

Metallica

Yamaha electric guitar
Guitar strap
Guitar amp (15watt)
Spare strings and plectrums
Instant Guitar DVD

Yamaha Guitar Package Review

This is a mean guitar for its price range. Yamaha have always been known for producing quality products across the market, and this beginners package is no exception.

Setting Up

When you open up this package, setting up is reasonably simple. Plug in the amplifier and connect the guitar to the amp with the jack lead. Before hitting the strings however you should check the volume of the amp – you do not want to annoy the neighbours – at least not right away!

Learning the Guitar

Picking up a few riffs on the electric guitar is remarkably simple. With some dedication and time, you can master some iconic rock riffs; anything from the intro to metallica’s Enter Sandman to the grooving Oasis hit Supersonic. This package comes equipped with Instant Guitar DVD tutor to get you going.

Experiment

The amplifier allows you to change the sound of the guitar. Adding distortion will create a traditional rock sound, where as playing “clean” and increasing the treble will give you a tinnier, more punky sound.

Slayer – Reign in Blood CD Review

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

As I re-import both of my Reign In Blood CD’s (original and remaster) to my iTunes for what seems like the 10th time, I decide to check out to see if anyone commented on the remastered version’s bonus tracks, or maybe the remastered vs. original sound. To my utter amazement, I see that the overall rating for this record is a pathetic 81%! Now that type of rating is appropriate for an overrated, mediocre but still classic work like British Steel, or a solid thrash comeback like Endgame, but come on! This is REIGN… IN… BLOOD!

It was enough to cause me to write this review. Now, I don’t think it’s going to do any good to analyze the songs or rave about how it’s only 28 minutes, or any of the normal people deservedly praise this record for on a regular basis. That said, yes, it IS my intention to help raise the score of this crucial record by giving it a 100. BUT, that also happens to be the score that I actually feel it deserves. This record and no others.

Metallica

Here’s the thing: I don’t believe that any two records can be exactly the same and hence deserve the same score. Now since there are obviously more than 100 metal records in existence, it’s impossible to give every record a different score. But what IS possible is to assign a top rating. a 100 is THE highest rating. This score necessarily needs to be reserved for that ONE record in your collection that you believe is the BEST RECORD OF ALL TIME. A record that no others can top. To give out more than one 100 score means that you really aren’t sure what you like best, and more than that, aren’t really putting new records in context, because scores can change over time. I probably wouldn’t have put Reign In Blood at #1 on release day in 1986. But over time, it’s proven itself worthy…

Slayer – Reign in Blood CD Review

Point being, acceptable candidates for the 100 slot would surely include the first 3 Sabbath records, Sad Wings, Painkiller, Puppets, Rust in Peace, Ace of Spades, Bonded By Blood, etc. And I wouldn’t fault anyone for placing any of these records at 100. But in this reviewer’s eyes, it is metal sacrilege to have Reign In Blood sitting on this glorious website at a paltry 81, and here’s why:

For all the cries about the major label sellout, the big time producer and all that shit, has any band ever conformed LESS to what we typify as major label influence? Priest did pop covers at their label’s request which then turned into pop metal originals, Maiden did Women In Uniform, Metallica went on MTV with a ballad, and Slayer did what, got faster and heavier?! yes! sure the songs got shorter, but they cut the fat, got straight to the point, and still didn’t cut the solos out. And maybe that was Rubin’s influence, but the difference is that is benefited the songs and the album enormously. For the first time, a metal band took what was great about punk, the succinct and straightforward delivery, and actually used it to create a better heavy metal song. I love punk rock but there is nothing punk rock about the songs on Reign In Blood. They are out and out heavy metal songs played faster, with more precision, and with a more venomous but contradictorily clearer and organic delivery than had ever happened before or since.

And let’s talk about precision. Not the precision of pro-tooled digital autonomous bullshit that is all-consuming in our current time, but the precision of skilled musicians, skillfully recorded. Don’t get me wrong, I love raw and I love early Slayer. There are some absolutely killer songs, but like early Kreator, Venom, Bathory, even Megadeth, they are muddy as hell. A cacophony of noise. And sometimes a cacophony of noise suits my mood just fine. But more often than not, a precision-guided metal attack destroys all comers. When it comes to Reign In Blood, the production suits the songs perfectly. Songs this fast, with double kick and rhythm guitar work this good, would simply come across as a sludgy mess with production any less clear than Rubin’s (listen to the snare!). But in the process, he sacrifices absolutely none of the immediacy and brutal attack of the songs. They hit, and they hit hard. Crank this record up (especially the original master, with all dynamics fully intact) and you can hear every little nuance of every instrument, with drums and solos obviously at the forefront. And if repetition is truth, then I say again, clarity equals power. And that point is proven in an instant by comparing the Reign In Blood session outtake of Aggressive Perfector with the original Metal Massacre III version found on the Haunting the Chapel EP reissue.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil – DVD Review

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Before 1970 blues had been the musical basis for most successful rock bands, and from that point forward the blues bands expanded into all sorts of progressive directions. Recording techniques became more layered and advanced; musical styles became more and more complex as bands experimented in classical and jazz fusions; songs were routinely more than 7 minutes long. Then, in the late 1970’s, punk burst into the mainstream, sharply reversing the trend toward complexity. metal was a genre that grew out of the blues-based rock bands of the past. It got a jolt of energy, however, when punk hit. The combination of the extremely loud and fast playing of American hardcore punk with metal beats and riffs came to be known as Thrash, or Thrash Metal.

The title of the new documentary, Anvil! The Story of Anvil, seems at first hearing to be that of a work of mockumentary fiction, possibly directed by Rob Reiner. Actually, while their drummer’s name is Robb Reiner, Anvil is a real band, and apparently they were one of the very first, if not the first Thrash Metal band. Anvil had their biggest commercial success in the first half of the 80’s. By 1986, however, the “Big Four” (Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeath, and Slayer) had taken what they learned from the scene and adapted it to achieve mainstream success. Anvil, meanwhile, failed to connect with a mass audience, and quickly became the victims of an unfortunate contract and their own unwillingness to change their sound to appeal to wider audiences.

Metallica

This is the background for the story of Anvil’s Steve “Lips” Kudlow (vocals, lead guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums), out of Toronto. The documentary picks them up 28 years, and 16 albums, later. After all these years, Lips and Robb are still playing in small clubs for maybe 20 to 30 people a night. In stark contrast to the Big Four of Thrash Metal, Lips and Robb have to work blue collar jobs to support themselves and their families, but continue to play because of their love and passion for the music. Lips is philosophical about his band’s misfortunes because it’s that or tear his hair out, which of course is out of the question for metalheads.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil – DVD Review

In the hopes of turning their fortunes around, Anvil sets out on a European tour, put together by a dedicated fan, which turns out to be pretty disastrous. Lips flips out one night in Prague when they get paid in soup, and another night Robb refuses to play to an empty room. The frustration on their faces is heartbreaking. Soon we’re rooting for Lips and Robb as honest, hardworking folks who haven’t gotten the breaks in life. They search for validation, so that they can feel like the lifetime of work they each put into Anvil wasn’t a waste.

After the tour, Lips remains steadfast while Robb seems more discouraged. They soon get another shot to prove themselves, as they get a call to work on a new record with Chris Tsangerides, who produced their biggest successes of the early 80’s. Lips tears up in an interview before the recording, proclaiming in desperation, “We’re gonna do it!” as if through sheer will alone they can achieve success. During the recording process itself, a lifetime of frustration brings the relationship between best friends Robb and Lips to a breaking point, only to see them find renewed faith in one another through the mutual strife.

While we identify with the search for validation for a lifetime of work, it becomes clearer as the film progresses, and their pursuit of major label contracts is met with rejection after rejection, that there is something insanely delusional about their persistence. They’re stubbornly committed to the musical style they helped originate, regardless of its current marketability. While the filmmakers and fans might regard this stubbornness with admiration, their wives have a more sobering take. As Robb’s wife frustratingly tells us, “It’s too bad no one’s living in the real world. It’s a joke. It’s a joke.”

With the critical success of the Anvil documentary film, the band has enjoyed the biggest success of their careers. Now they play sellout festivals before thousands of people all the time. While you root for the guys because of their personal stories, one can’t escape the conclusion that their newfound success was a result of the film’s impact and the sympathy it generates from the viewer, and not in any way related to their songwriting. In all honesty, I think Anvil sounds terrible. It doesn’t help that the music in the film is largely centered on the plodding and uninspiring track “Metal on Metal” which fails to convey whatever musical innovations put them on the map in the early 80’s. Most of the live performances by Anvil in the film are cut short, which is frustrating and suspicious. Their musical worthiness is never really proven, nor is it really the point. They make low art but they’re proud of it. We can applaud them because they’ve always been true to themselves, and they’re getting credit for that. They finally caught a break.

A review of "Metallica and Philosophy"

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

The book, which is the subject of this review is metallica and Philosophy: A Crash Course in Brain Surgery, edited by William Irwin and published in 2007. It is part of a genre more and more books about how to "series of pop culture icons like the movie The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons TV show, even through the lens of philosophy. Essays of the book, a series of twenty brief review of the band metallica, relationships betweenStates, and the texts concerning some of the key ideas of Western philosophy.

The main purpose of the book and the series as a whole is to the average reader against the "big ideas" to introduce the philosophy, while more of a fun place. The philosophy is often studied only in places of higher education and only reluctantly by his students, the strength of further reading and what they can see. Knowledge of this type isnot just to come to try to answer the deeper questions of existence and requires hard to imagine a human being. To find the editors to show the number that can be an amusing study of philosophy, however, and "think deeply concerned about TV, movies and music does not make you a" complete idiot. However, each essay is written with the ultimate goal or readability in mind. While the subjects to examine the often abstract, the authors use numerous examples of how texts quote, or use anecdotal examples of the band's history. This makes the ideas easier to understand and essays are not involved inProlonged exposure to esoteric topics. Many of the essays are a bit 'longer for a fuller discussion of the problems, but the length of each was enough to raise an issue considered in the context of philosophical thought, and establish some conclusions and areas for further research.
